1. Fulfill Training and Educational Requirements
Research universities with good architecture programs. Choose a program with accreditation from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). You can enroll in a five-year program and combine a bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree. Or you can study for the master’s degree separately if the school doesn’t offer the combined program.
Before licensure, most states require potential architects to complete an Architectural Experience Program. You’ll then need to pass two versions of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE): ARE 4.0 and ARE 5.0. All the processes before licensure can be expensive. Good presentation skills are also a must-have for any architect. You can develop these skills through practice. Create presentations and pitches for your colleagues and get their feedback. To engage your audience, make your communication as simple as possible and avoid too much jargon.
4. Network and Connect
Like in any other industry, establishing relationships is critical to your success as an architect. Take time to meet people in your industry and stay in touch with them. When you’re known as friendly, open, candid and approachable, opportunities will come your way. There are many talented architects out there who want to succeed just as badly as you, so you must set yourself apart with your interpersonal skills.
